While Others Were Standing, He Chose To Sit Down
We stood up to celebrate cancer survivors. All the while, my uncle grew
tired, and sat down. I was at the Pink Tie Gala to support breast cancer
awareness month. During this gala, I heard stats on the amount of people who
will die from cancer this year. I didn’t realize the next one would be him- at
this moment.
I felt I needed to visit him in the hospital, but I assumed he would be with
me and not with God. As I contemplated my day, I put this ‘to-do’ to the end of
my list. I always figured he would wait for me. Time waits for nobody. It
does not give you two hours to, “get this finished real quick”. My timeline
didn’t align with his. Now I learned to set priorities straight and get things
done.
“I always figured he would wait for me.”
At this great gala, we honored survivors. We clapped for those beating the disease. While standing, I looked over my left shoulder and glanced at my mom picking up her phone, then an abrupt scurry out of the room. Because of the unexpected change in her demeanor, I soon followed her. She told me the news. You see uncle Adrian is a cancer survivor, but it came back again. I knew he would fight it, stand up to the challenge. I believed he would win. Instead, he became weary. His legs were tired. He stood for a long time, and then he sat down.
