An emotional journal may not need any prompts. However having a structure to emotional journals can help keep you focused. Below you will see an outline for an emotional journal.

Emotional Journal Structure

When I am not feeling myself I tend to use emotional journals to help get to the source of what’s bothering me. I use the simple format below:

  1. What happened today
    • I try not to put any emotion in this section. I am objective and stick to the facts
  2. How did I feel about it?
    • This section is where I place my feelings – bad or good. The expression of the feelings gives the outlet to see what is going on.
  3. Why Did I feel this way?
    • If it wasn’t covered in the earlier section – I try to see the trigger for the emotion. This can later decide if the trigger is real.
  4. What should I do next time
    • Provides actions for you so that can repeat or avoid the feelings the next time the event happens.
