From Getting Started To Getting Overwhelmed

Overwhelmed?

Have you had an incredible idea or assignment you are eager to do? You get started, then the reality of how much you have to do becomes apparent. You went from getting started to getting overwhelmed. If this is you, you are in the right place.

In the article, I will give you tips on how you can organize to reduce stress and focus on getting your ideas and assignments done.  At the end of the post, I have a template you can download to guide you through the steps.

Know Your Due Dates

It is essential to know when something is due. You don’t want to miss an opportunity because you didn’t understand when you needed to get your materials published.

You can use the due date to understand other dates that you have to complete tasks. For instance, if you have a due date of April 17th and know you need two days to review before sending it out, You will set your other tasks to finish two days before.

Know When You Are Done

Many people create goals, but fewer people have clarity in their plans. If you define completion, you can get clarity. Defining completion helps to create boundaries, so the scope of the work doesn’t extend beyond what you intended. Describing also allows you to understand the end product and visualize it.

To define when you are done, I suggest that you describe the capabilities the product will create. If you would like to clarify further, you can depict who this is for and how they will benefit from you achieving your goal.

Barriers

There are always obstacles to achieving a goal. Barriers, or risks, can be as simple as oversleeping or as complex as inclement weather. Planning for issues can help you avoid derailment. Identifying risks and developing mitigation actions is the best approach to solving them. For instance, if oversleeping is a barrier,  I may have a mitigation plan of adding a second alarm. If inclement weather is a potential risk, I may plan for an alternate location or date. You don’t have to list every barrier, but it is essential to list the major obstacles.

Resources

Who will you need to help you achieve your goal? Are there advisors you may want to leverage? Are there materials you need to gather? Dealing with needs as they occur adds time and stress. Understanding your needs will help reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed as you think about your needs in advance.

Action Items

Now that you have a good sense of your goals, needs, timing, and barriers, it is time to create your to-do list. List both the actions you need to complete, but also include the due dates. Look at the other sections described and add any actions that come to your mind. You should update your action plan regularly. As you think of new actions, add them to the list. Be sure to update the items that are complete as well. Getting a holistic view of the actions on paper will help you keep focus and reduce a sense of being overwhelmed.

Conclusion

Don’t let the weight of a big idea prevent you from accomplishing your goals. Leveraging the techniques will help you move forward and achieve what excites you.
